(Sun Journal (New Bern, NC) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 22--Craven County Commissioner Theron McCabe was congratulated by the board last week for his recent appointment to the N.C. Association of County Commissioners Board of Directors.
A Craven County native representing his home district including the southern Havelock, Harlowe and Adams Creek area, McCabe was appointed as one of four at-large directors for the statewide group, which was established in 1908 to advocate for county government.
Commissioners elected in all of the state's 100 counties are eligible to join the NCACC, which has 18 districts and a total of 29 directors.
Elected District 5 commissioner in 2006 and again in 2010, McCabe is a 1967 graduate of Havelock High School. After graduation, he moved to New York City and became a uniformed law enforcement officer. He later served as a detective assigned to the New York City drug enforcement division, retired in 1995 and came back to Craven County.
On his return, McCabe became an active volunteer for the Harlowe Fire Department. Prior to his election as county commissioner, he served as department chief for three terms and is now assistant chief.
McCabe also uses his expertise as the commissioner appointee to the Local Emergency Planning Committee. He is also commissioner delegate for Craven County's Nursing Home Advisory Committee and the Havelock Library Board, and is on the Craven County Crime Stoppers Board and Craven County Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.
The son of the late Rev. Roy McCabe and Bertha McCabe, McCabe attends Piney Grove AME Zion Church.
