Eagerness to buy Apple's latest iPhone led to contemplation on ways to reduce reliance on smartphones. As comedian Louis CK notes, people need the capacity to be themselves rather than to be constantly doing something. Switching off push delivery of email is one way to reduce smartphone use, as is refraining from using the devices at specific times such as during meals. Keeping a superseded model for as long as possible can help with the realisation that it is just a tool.
