ThomasNet.com® Helps ISM-New York Celebrate 100 Years of Advancing and Supporting the Supply Management Profession
NEW YORK --(Business Wire)--
Over the last 100 years, supply management and purchasing professionals
have been at the epicenter of New York City's commercial activity. These
individuals do more than control corporate spending: Their decisions
about products and suppliers affect companies' speed to market, the
reputations of their brands, and their bottom-line performance. As their
business environment has evolved from regional to global, and the
Internet has transformed communications and commerce, these
professionals face a host of new challenges, along with new
opportunities to make a positive impact.
Although no-one could have foreseen all these changes in 1913, Elwood B.
Hendricks, who had been a salesman for the Thomas Register of American
Manufacturers (the predecessor to ThomasNet.com),
was a visionary of another sort. He foresaw a need for an organization
that would bring together purchasing agents in a common effort to
improve themselves and their positions, allowing them to make a greater
contribution to their firms. His vision, along with the dedication and
support of leading purchasing executives, led to the formation of the
Purchasing Agents' Association of New York in 1913. This organization
was a predecessor to today's Institute for Supply Management™
(ISM)-New York, and a springboard for the international ISM.
On Thursday, October 3, ThomasNet.com and ISM-New York will come
together to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of this chapter, and
the role it played in opening opportunities for supply management
professionals nationwide. Today, ISM leads the profession through its
standards of excellence, research, promotional activities, and
educational/certification programs. In addition, the organization
publishes the Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing ISM Report On
Business®. These monthly reports are vital, leading
economic indicators, and are followed by economists and business media
outlets around the world.
