A business anchor in southern Lancaster County, Ferguson & Hassler supermarket, has not only been remodeled but also added a cafe, gas pumps and a water hut.
Indoor remodeling started last October. The first step accomplished was new grocery shelves. This paved the way for the rest of the project including redesigned produce, bakery and deli areas, plus new flooring.
Ferguson & Hassler, an independent supermarket based at TownsEdge Shopping Village in Quarryville, has adopted a modern, consumer- driven marketing strategy.
The supermarket now offers a line of gluten-free products.
"We offer several hundred of these items each week," said James Hassler, one of the owners.
The store has also started a coffee club and a gas-rewards program.
A new 58-seat cafe gives customers access to a salad bar, baked goods and hot and cold deli foods where shoppers can find anything from a chicken salad sandwich to homemade shepherd's pie. Free Wi- Fi service is available in the cafe.
Valero self-serve gas pumps opened Tuesday. The new gas island on the store's parking lot can handle up to six vehicles at a time. Customers can purchase gasoline, diesel fuel and kerosene.
Elizabethtown Crystal Pure Water is being sold from a new hut on the store's parking lot. The change from a dispenser on the wall of the store to a freestanding hut takes the traffic congestion out of filling up water bottles.
James Hassler, president, and Timothy Hassler, secretary/ treasurer, are third-generation storeowners. They work closely with George "Chip" Hassler III who serves as vice president.
The Hassler family is growing a business that started on State Street in 1916 and now employs about 180 people. They hired about 10 new employees to support the business expansion.
The Hasslers did not say how much the project cost, but the steps they took are in line with what many grocery chains are doing to stay competitive in the marketplace.
