Dainippon Screen dissolves JV with Applied Materials
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) OSAKA, Sept. 27 -- (Kyodo) _ Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co. said Friday it has dissolved its semiconductor manufacturing equipment joint venture with Applied Materials Inc. and made it a wholly owned unit to improve its competitiveness.
The Kyoto-based joint company, Sokudo Co., manufactures equipment used for photoresist coating and developing on semiconductor wafers to form circuits. Applied Materials has given its 19 percent stake in the company to Dainippon without compensation.
Applied Materials, the world's largest semiconductor-making equipment firm, on Tuesday announced its merger with Japan's Tokyo Electron Ltd., which has a dominant share in the global market of photoresist coating and developing equipment.
Dainippon Screen said the joint venture dissolution was proposed by the U.S. partner. Applied Materials' Japanese subsidiary said the joint company could not achieve an expected level of revenue growth.
