Loope named economic development director [The Roanoke Times, Va.]
(Roanoke Times (Roanoke, VA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 01--Nearly two months after she helped seal a deal that delivered an international company and almost 100 new jobs to the region, the acting-director of Roanoke County's Economic Development Department is getting an upgrade.
In an announcement Tuesday, county Administrator Clay Goodman named Jill Loope as the department's director. Loope has served as acting director for just over two years.
"We've already been doing great work in our office and we're going to continue to do so," she said. "We've had a lot of success this past year and our goal is to continue that success."
Her ascent within the department followed the unceremonious departure of former county Economic Development Director Doug Chittum.
Chittum lost his position with the county after a June 2011 drunk driving charge, which a Roanoke County judge later reduced to reckless driving.
During the summer, Loope played a key role in attracting the Ardagh Group to the Hollins District, where they bought the former Hanover Distribution Center -- a $93.5 million investment.
In his announcement, Goodman cited Loope's skills and contacts as a boon for the locality.
She started her career with the county in 2000 as the director of community relations. Within a year she was transferred into the economic development office. Formerly, she served as the director for economic development in Caroline County and Radford.
Loope said her office is currently run by four people, including herself. A fifth position, assistant economic development director, remains vacant.
