TRA ensures competitive market [Daily Tribune (Bahrain)]
(Daily Tribune (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ? ? The challenges of Telecom munications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the coming years will be to ensure that the regulatory framework addresses recent competitive developments and support competition and the interests of end users. The TRA completed a number of market reviews in the first half of 2013, including those relating to international capacity and mobile termination services and is currently undertaking another few regarding the broadband services and leased line services. These have been identified by the TRA and industry as important work streams set out in the TRA's Three Year Work Plan (2013-2015) published in March this year. "We have already published our Three-Year Work Plan based on the National Telecom Plan and the government policy for the sector's evolu tion and from that we have earmarked several key projects including the LTE spectrum allocation, which has recently been held, the National Broadband Network and the shift from a regulatory authority to a competition authority, " Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Director General, Mohammed Bubshait told DT News. As TRA has reached its goal to ensure a competitive telecoms market, the innovative and competitive offers of the telecoms operators in Bahrain have resulted in an increase in service penetration rates. The number of mobile subscribers has increased by 56pc between 2008 and the second quarter of the year and mobile penetration rate increased from 130pc in 2008 to 182pc. The volume of mobile-originated calls has also increased significantly since 2008, by 216pc in the case of domestic mobile volumes and by 175pc in the case of mobile-originated international calls. The other notable observation during 2012 and the first half of 2013 has been the continuing strong growth in mobile broadband services. ? ?
