ON Semiconductor to nearly halve jobs in Japan
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Oct. 9 -- (Kyodo) _ Arizona-based ON Semiconductor Corp. plans to cut the number of jobs at its three Japanese units by up to 910 from around 2,000 in response to a decline in global semiconductor demand, industry sources said Wednesday.
The cut through the solicitation of voluntary retirements is expected to reduce annual costs by $50 million, they said.
The job cut will include 210 jobs at Kanto Sanyo Semiconductors Co. in Hanyu, Saitama Prefecture, which the U.S. company plans to shut down by next June.
The remaining 600 to 700 jobs will be cut at Sanyo Semiconductor Co. in Oizumi, Gunma Prefecture, and Sanyo Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture.
ON Semiconductor acquired the three Japanese chipmakers from Sanyo Electric Co. in 2011.
