Milton Hershey School Graphic Communication Technologies Program to Receive Award
Hershey, Oct 10, 2013 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) --
Milton Hershey School's(R) Graphic Communication Technologies program has won the 2013 Frederick D. Kagy Education Award of Excellence. It is the first time a Pennsylvania school has won the national award.
"We will display this award proudly and use it as inspiration to move the program further ahead to help more students begin their career in what we believe is one of the most exciting industries in America today," said Michael DeAcosta, graphic arts teacher.
The award recognizes Milton Hershey School for having "One of the nation's outstanding graphic arts programs." MHS earned praise for strong instructional leadership, a high degree of professionalism and innovational techniques. The award, sponsored by the Printing Industries of America's Ben Franklin Honor Society, was established in 1992.
"We have made numerous changes in the curriculum over the past few years, which have greatly increased the rigor and workload, and our students have responded by earning multiple national certifications and working very hard to live the mission of MHS as it relates to a career," said Mindy Harmon, graphic arts teacher.
MHS's Graphic Communication Technologies program is nationally certified by the Printing Industries of America. In 2013, students in the program earned 92 national certifications in three Print-Ed areas. Students also participate in job shadowing, work experiences, and dual-enrollment college courses.
"The program does a good job of keeping us up-to-date on new technologies and software," said Tadd Hartz, a senior from Reading who would like to one day own his own print shop. "We not only learn industry skills, but we also are taught a strong work ethic."
The Graphic Communication Technologies program is one of 11 Career/Technical Education (CTE) programs at the School. Every student in last year's graduating class received at least one industry certification.
