Amazon signs deal for distribution center in Ruskin [Tampa Tribune, Fla.]
(Tampa Tribune (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 10--TAMPA -- Online retailer Amazon has signed a deal to open a 1 million square-foot distribution center in Ruskin and will begin construction immediately, Hillsborough County Commission Chairman Ken Hagan said this morning.
The company is expected to hire more than 1,000 people, providing a shot in the arm to south Hillsborough County's economy.
"It's a grandslam for our community," Hillsborough County Commission Chairman Ken Hagan said.
Amazon and its prospective landlord, an affiliate of insurance giant USAA, have been negotiating with the owner of the South Shore Corporate Park in Ruskin for months about a giant warehouse that would employ a thousand employees.
The parties finally reached an agreement Wednesday, with USAA closing on its purchase of land in the industrial park, according to Hagan. The seller was Minnesota-based Ryan Cos.
The real estate arm of insurer USAA has collaborated with Amazon in at least a half dozen warehouses across the United States.
Official word from the parties involved was hard to come by Thursday. A local Ryan Cos. executive was unable to comment. However, Hagan said he received an email from Ryan Cos. confirming the deal.
