(Liverpool Echo (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mark has his sights set on boosting specs appeal ; Mark Blankstone, founder and director of Blankstone Opticians My DayMark Blankstone is the founder and director of Blankstone Opticians, a niche firm based in Derby Square, end of Lord Street, Liverpool city centre. This is his day...
7am: I wake up. Typically this is the time when I get a chance to survey world news, weather, sport and even a bit of celebrity gossip before working life for the day begins. I literally don't get a minute any other time of the day! 8am: Despite having spent the last 20 years focused on driving the business from our city centre boutique, I am keen to get there a little earlier today. I rarely work from home as I enjoy the daily client contact, and I essentially live and breathe what I do from our base in Derby Square in the heart of the city centre.
9am: I've been sifting through my emails for the past half-an- hour but this is, thankfully, because it's a Monday and a lot of enquiries have come in over the weekend. As the week goes on, I get fewer emails as enquiries tend to come more via the phone, from walk- ins and also through our website and direct marketing tools.
9.15am: I am attending a marketing meeting with 'affinity' partners in the city. These are established brand names within the health and lifestyle sector in Liverpool and we tend to view ourselves as being retailers in 2013, rather than just your local corner shop optician.
10.30am: Back in store and we've just received our first consignment of new season spectacles and sunglasses, which are bang on trend and, knowing how fashion savvy the people of Liverpool are, they should fly off the shelves.
11.30am: I've just had a succession of appointments with three of our many corporate clients and I am now tied up until lunchtime with customers taking advantage of our eyesight tests. I love interacting with our customers whether they are corporate clients or have just walked in off the street. All our clients are precious to us and they are all treated with equal respect.
1pm: I'm going to spend half an hour out of the business to freshen my mind for the busy afternoon ahead and grab some food at the same time.
1.30pm: Another delivery - this time a high fashion accessories brand - has arrived. We've done a deal with another niche company to exclusively stock their very chic product. 3pm: The team and I have spent the last hour-and-a-half sorting the display of all new stock. To complete the look, our new pop-up image promoting our contact lenses offer has just landed. We didn't plan it like this but I've got a great team who support us around my specific client appointments so we can handle it!
3.15pm: I'm now with clients until 5pm, seeing people with a wide range of issues. There's never a dull moment. One new client has been buying contact lenses from a well-known high street store but she maintains that the quality of the product and the after care has turned her onto us.
5pm: My last meeting of the day... it's with our marketing consultants and we're discussing activity for the remainder of the year.
6.30pm: Dinner is in the oven, so I make my way home... time to relax or get the nerves jangling...Liverpool FC are on television tonight!
