(St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 15--If you're like me, you are getting fed up with stuffing your wallet with rewards cards from the ever-expanding list of retailers who have a loyalty program. Or your key chain has become a walking advertisement for every brand you shop.
So you might be interested hear that Famous Footwear, which is part of Clayton-based Brown Shoe Co., has embedded its rewards program into its new smartphone application.
The new-and-improved app, which launched last month, keeps track of your reward program points and lets you know if you have a $5 off certificate -- or more -- waiting for you. And when you want to redeem it, you can just hand your phone to the cashier who can scan the certificate right from your phone.
"Typically, they had to wait for a piece of mail or an email before they knew what they had available," said Will Smith, the company's chief marketing officer, explaining how the rewards program worked in the past. "With the app, it happens almost instantaneously."
Still, there is a bit of lag time. Smith said the system will update multiple times a day, so the points from a purchase should show up in a customer's rewards balance account on their phone within a few hours. But that's a lot better than waiting four those statements four times a year.
Rewards program users, which right now account for about 70 percent of Famous Footwear customers, can also use the app to track their past purchases that were made either online or in a store in the last four years.
Some other highlights of the app include exclusive mobile discounts and offers such as coupons and bonus point events.
And, of course, it has a social media sharing element to it, too. Not only can customers click a heart icon to "like" and keep track of their favorite styles, they can also more easily share them from the app to Facebook, Twitter, or email.
So now that your wallet is a bit lighter, you just have to figure out how to organize all of those screens full of apps on your phone.
