Mamma Mia! Amazon marks 15 years of trading at Swansea [Western Mail (Wales)]
(Western Mail (Wales) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ONLINE retail giant Amazon has revealed the ten most popular products ordered by customers in Swansea as it marks 15 years of internet trading.
Amazon runs a depot at Jersey Marine near Swansea which is in the process of taking on 1,500 seasonal workers to cope with the demand for products in the build-up to and the aftermath of Christmas.
The most popular products ordered by customers in Swansea include the DVD of box office smash hit Mamma Mia, the adult fiction series Fifty Shades of Grey and the Harry Potter series of children's novels by JK Rowling.
"Since starting out as an online bookseller in 1998, Amazon.co.uk has expanded year on year and now offers customers more than 100 million products across more than 30 stores," said Xavier Garambois, Vice President of EU Retail at Amazon.
Amazon runs eight fulfilment centres throughout the UK in Rugeley, Dunfermline, Peterborough, Gourock, Doncaster, Mar-ston Gate, Hemel Hempstead and Swansea.
The fulfilment centres each house millions of products with the largest being in Dunfermline which is the size of 14 football pitches (1 million sq ft).
During Amazon.co.uk's busiest 24 hour period over Christmas 2012, a delivery lorry left one of Amazon's eight UK fulfilment centres on average once every two minutes and 10 seconds.
A total of 3.5 million items were ordered on Monday December 3 last year which was the equivalent of 41 items ordered every second.
Amazon has also invested more than Pounds 1bn in UK infrastructure.
