PUNJAB UNIVERSITY HAS A HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHING FACULTY THAT PROVIDES INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS

It was the first to be organized in the sub-continent in Muslim majority region. The fact that 2-Nobel laureates are from this University speaks volumes for its research and academic excellence.
The University of the Punjab has played a premier role in higher education in Pakistan and is situated in Punjab. The University is striving to give a conducive environment for the pursuit of the academic functions. The University comprises of 4-campuses, 13-faculties, 10-constituent colleges, over 63-departments, centers, institutes, and 500 plus affiliated colleges.
It has more than 730 permanent faculty members involved in teaching and over 30,000 on campus students. There are approximately 350 exams for over 450,000 students yearly. The University has 26 hostels 16 for male and 10 for female students. Most of these students are accommodated in the hostels at the Quaid-e-Azam campus. On the other hand, the student’s library remained in its old building upto 1988 and in the same year it was moved to its current 2-storied building. The total area of library is 102,000 sq. feet with a basement of 10,000 sq. feet.
It opened functioning with the purchased collection of Sir Donald Macleod's 2000 volumes, and upto September 2002 it boasts a book collection of 475,000, which adds 25,000 manuscripts, 300 foreign and local journals, 25,000 online full text foreign journals and 65,200 bound volumes of national and international research journals covering many discipline taught in the University. This prestigious library has greater than 50,000 volumes of old documents printed during the later half of 19th and first two decades of 21st century. The library has 1,750 microfilms of rare material. It is a depositary library for the UNO publications. It has more than 25,000 members comprising of faculty members, students and other researchers of the University and its affiliated colleges. Furthermore, each institute/teaching department/constitute college has its own library where research journals and books, chiefly in the respective specialized fields given.
The total number of books in all the University libraries is greater 748,600.
The University is the first public university in the area of IT to lay down 42 km long fiber optic cable network: having 74 optical fiber nodes serving all hotels, departments and administrative block through local area network. There are over 6,500 state-of-the-art computers now in the University. Computer culture has been created. To control all the activities of the overall IT infrastructure i.e. expansion and maintenance, network development, giving troubleshooting/maintenance services to all departments, 24-hour Internet facility, online announcement of examination results, database management and website development, software development, the University has full-fledged service department in Quaid-e-Azam/Allama Iqbal Campus, namely IT centre. This centre is working for the growth and smooth progress for the evolution of fresh IT developments and its maintenance in the University.
Bandwidth has been gradually raised from 64Kb to 450Mbps in Quaid-e-Azam Campus and 50Mbps in Allama Iqbal Campus against PERN2.
The University of the Punjab has also opened campus at Gujranwala, with four disciplines such as law, business administration, information technology and commerce. The building has a great resemblance with Punjab University old campus building at Lahore. It has administration bloc, one big multipurpose hall, 37 classrooms and allied facilities.
This campus of the University is a unique field facility in Pakistan to support field research projects, study tours and skill promoting workshops. It is under the management responsibility of CIMR. The center is equipping its field station at Khanspur with necessary field laboratories, reference literature and figure processing unit, adding drafting and drawing, photo-copying and photography services, besides facilities for holding seminars, group training and meetings workshops as well as residential facilities. For students of the CIMR, this facility will be used for staging guided study tours to familiarize them with natural landforms and their GeoEnvironment. The field station will be utilized also for launching some research projects leading to Diploma, M.Phil, M.Sc. and PhD thesis.
ALLAMA IQBAL CAMPUS
The syndicate room, historical senate hall and the main hall are located at this campus. Meetings of the major organs of the University like the syndicate, the senate, the selection board and the advanced studies and amp; research board are generally held there. The college of pharmacy, fine arts, information and technology, oriental college and department of French, are also located at this campus. Allama Iqbal campus also accommodates some administrative offices, chiefly of the sports department, the University press, a student hostel and some other departments of the University.
The campus has grown over the years into a comprehensive center of academic activity. It accommodates sports fields, students’ hostels, staff residences, academic blocks, a medical complex, a boat club, swimming pool and other facilities. It gives a conducive and peaceful environment for academic pursuits. With the addition of academic and other blocks over the years, the facilities at the Quaid-e-Azam campus have grown gradually to meet the expanding requirements of research and teaching.
