Profile of China's telecom industry in September 2013

The following is a profile of China's
telecom industry in September 2013:
China's telecom industry registered 118.81 billion yuan in
business volume in September 2013, up 7.2 percent year on year. Its
main operating turnovers totaled 101.81 billion yuan in the period,
up 7.5 percent.

The number of mobile phone subscribers increased 10.94 million in
September, boosting the total number to 1.21 billion. Meanwhile,
China's 3G service subscribers grew 16.31 million to 367.6 million.
The contribution of homegrown TD-SCDMA networks contributed 60.2
percent to the increase of 3G service subscribers.

The broadband business in China kept growing in the first three
quarters, and the gap between urban areas and rural areas was
narrowing. In the period of Jan.-Sept., the number of fixed-line
Internet broadband access users rose by 15.95 million to 186 million.
After the cabinet set "Broadband China" a national strategy, the
basic telecom operators accelerated the upgrade of their broadband
networks. The users of Internet access above 4M accounted for 75.4
percent of the total, up 9.6 percentage points and 3.1 percentage
points respectively from the end of 2012 and the end of June this
Meanwhile, the number of mobile Internet users grew by 55.17
million to 820 million, with a penetration of 67.9 percent. The
number of mobile phone users with Internet access grew 51.42 million
to 788 million.

Non-voice business businesses, including data business and
Internet business, contributed more to the industry's total operating
turnover, which reached 463.78 billion yuan in the first nine months
of 2013, up 16.6 percent year on year. Its contribution to the growth
of total operating turnover grew to 95.7 percent from 89 percent in
the same period of last year.
Mobile data and Internet business generated 139.57 billion yuan of
operating turnover in the period, up 55.2 percent year on year. Its
contribution to the growth of total operating turnover was 71.8
percent, 23.6 percentage points higher than that for the same period
Among the industry's total operating turnover, 651.12 billion yuan
was from mobile telecom business, up 10.1 percent year on year. The
growth was 1.1 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points
respectively lower than in the same period of 2012 and in the first
half of 2013. And 219.76 billion yuan was from fixed telecom
business, up 4.3 percent year on year. The growth was 0.3 percentage
points higher than that for the same period of 2012.

The investment in data telecom sector and transmission sector grew
steadily in the first three quarters of 2013.
In the period, China's telecom industry completed an investment of
72.27 billion yuan in the mobile telecom sector, down 19.7 percent
year on year. The growth was 17.3 percentage points lower than that
for the year-earlier period. Among the mobile telecom investment,
50.34 billion yuan were investment in the 3G sector, down 15.4
percent year on year.
The industry completed an investment of 32.56 billion yuan in the
Internet and data telecom sector, up 34.2 percent year on year. Its
investment in the transmission sector was 57.29 billion yuan, up 9.1
percent year on year.
The following Chart 7 compares the fixed-asset investment in
different sectors in 2011-2013.

Telecom operating turnovers in east, central and west China in
September went up 6.6 percent, 9.2 percent and 11.3 percent,
respectively in the first three quarters.

The following Chart 10 reveals total mobile phone user number in each
Jiangsu province led the country by numbers of
fiber-to-the-home/office (FTTH/O) users. And newly-added FTTH/O user
number in east, central and west China in the first nine months was
8.45 million, 32.3 million and 31.3 million respectively.
Meanwhile, the proportion of FTTH/O users in the total Internet
broadband users was 23.1 percent in east China, 9.9 percentage points
and 7.6 percentage points respectively higher than in central China
and west China.
