Beleaguered smartphone maker BlackBerry Ltd., a Canadian company, is waiting for news on its possible acquisition by former Apple chief John Sculley.
Canadian newspaper the Globe and Mail reported this week that the Florida businessman and high-tech investor could be considering a purchase proposal with some Canadian partners.
While BlackBerry had no immediate comment on the report, Mr Sculley gave an interview to the Globe and Mail, saying: "The only thing I would say is, I think there's a lot of future value in Blackberry. But without experienced people who have run this type of business, and without a strategic plan, it would be really challenging. Whoever buys it would have to have a strategic plan that was credible and could succeed, and they would want to have an experienced team that would be able to implement that plan."
Sculley ran Apple from 1983 to 1993, during which sales increased to $8 billion from $800 million.
His interest in BlackBerry puts him into the ring with other potential bidders, including Chinese PC and smartphone giant Lenovo Group, Google, Cisco Systems and German software company SAP.
Blackberry said in August it would examine its options on a sale of the company, including a straight-out sale, joint venture or strategic partnership.
