Fight looms over reading lessons

Western Australian Education Minister Peter Collier has ruled out allowing any federal intervention in the state's education system. Federal MP Alannah McTiernan has called for greater federal involvement in education, and has advocated greater use of phonics in teaching children how to read. Collier notes that phonics is already used in the state's schools.
