Jordan's mobile subscriber base rises 2.7% q/q to 10.2mn at end-Sep 2013 [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]
(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jordan had 10.277mn mobile phone users at end-September 2013, marking a 2.7% q/q increase and translating into a 155% penetration rate, according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC). Fixed-line telephone users reached 380,488 translating into a 6% penetration rate. Internet penetration reached 72% at the end of the third quarter with 4.864mn users. Internet subscriptions stood at 1.382mn or a 20.7% penetration rate. The majority, or 1.064mn Internet subscribers, were mobile broadband subscribers.
The Jordanian government hiked as of July 11 the special tax imposed on mobile phones, including smartphones, to 16% from the previous 8%. The tax increase aims to boost budget proceedings. The taxes on mobile phone subscriptions, both prepaid and post-paid, were also raised from 12% to 24%.
The mobile market in Jordan boasts three operators - Orange Mobile, operated by Jordan Telecom Group (JTG), Umniah and Kuwait's Zain.
The telecom sector contributes 14% to Jordan's GDP and employs more than 60,000 persons, according to official estimates.
