NUMBER'S UP FOR CHARGES ; CITY DESK [Mirror (UK)]
(Mirror (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Freephone will mean free when you call certain numbers from your mobile in future.
Telecoms regulator Ofcom said from June 2015, mobile users won't pay for 0800, 0808 and 116 numbers which are free from landlines. They currently cost mobile customers up to 40p a minute. Ofcom also announced measures to tackle confusion about how much it costs to call companies and organisations that use 08, 09 and 118 numbers. Access charges will have to be made clear by phone companies, and service charges must be specified by the organisation being contacted.
Ed Richards, chief executive of Ofcom, said: "These changes will be the biggest in more than a decade. We expect them to restore confidence in phone services and to increase competition."
