BRIEF: Special assistance approved for laid-off Micron workers [The Idaho Statesman](Idaho Statesman (Boise) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dec. 14--The Idaho Department of Labor says it will offer special job assistance to more than 350 Micron Technology Inc. employees who have lost their jobs since August. The Boise memory-chip manufacturer said in August that its purchase of Japan's Elpida Memory Inc. would lead to a 5 percent reduction in its 30,000-member worldwide workforce, with all of the cuts coming among the 25,000 non-Elpida employees. Until then, Micron employed about 5,600 people in Boise. The former employees qualify for assistance through the federal Trade Act Assistance Program, which is designed to help workers who lose jobs when their employers shift work outside of the U.S. The program offers re-employment assistance, including job referrals, skills training and resume training. The program can also offer free training for different kind of jobs than the employee originally worked. If the training site is outside of the employee's normal commute area, the program can pay for some of the transportation costs.
