NTCA Statement on Klobuchar Rural Spectrum Bill
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ARLINGTON, Va., Dec. 11 -- NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association issued the following news release:
NTCA-The Rural Broadband Association today issued the following statement from Chief Executive Officer Shirley Bloomfield in support of the Rural Spectrum Accessibility Act of 2013 introduced by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and co-sponsored by Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.):
"I commend Sen. Klobuchar for introducing this important piece of legislation, which seeks to ensure unused wireless spectrum can be put to good use serving more sparsely populated rural areas. NTCA's members are dedicated to providing competitive modern telecommunications services and ensuring the economic future of their rural communities. Wireless services can be an important part of solving that puzzle. But the wireless market is incredibly consolidated, with two carriers already holding 78% of the country's low-frequency, broadband-capable spectrum and accounting for more than 80% of wireless industry revenues. Licensing spectrum according to small geographic areas would allow smaller carriers like those in NTCA's membership to bid only for the territory they are interested in serving and ensure rural areas are not ignored when it comes time to deploy services."
