Time's running out to donate to the Caller-Times Children's Christmas Appeal [Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Texas]

(Caller-Times (Corpus Christi, TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dec. 15--CORPUS CHRISTI -- For the past four years, Sally Bettiga has donated to the Caller-Times Children's Christmas Appeal.

Bettiga said her contribution isn't much, but she looks forward to sending in her donation coupon each time.

"I get so many requests for donations, but I feel like this is the best one," Bettiga said. "I enjoy reading about the families and I like that it's supervised by the Caller-Times and the United Way." Bettiga may be humble about her generosity, but her donations have given hope to a lot of Coastal Bend children.

There is still time to donate before the Christmas Eve deadline.

Last year's campaign collected $136,774 in donations that helped more than 1,044 families, including 2,793 area children. This year's goal is to raise $150,000, said Steve Arnold, Caller-Times vice president of marketing and Children's Christmas Appeal campaign coordinator.

Donations still are being counted but as of Friday, the campaign totaled $64,960, Arnold said.

Last week, an anonymous group offered to match up to $25,000 donated to the campaign.

Arnold said that challenge has boosted contributions, but this week is vital for the program.

"We need to get as many funds to the agencies by end of next week to help families by Christmas," Arnold said. "People can donate online, send in their form or contact me and I'll pick up their donation personally." Arnold said he wants to make the donation process as easy as possible.

"There are so many families that need assistance and we want to help as many people as possible," Arnold said. "We appreciate the donations we've received so far." Since 1973, the Caller-Times has reported the plight of needy children during the holiday season. The names of those profiled are changed to protect the privacy of the families, who will be featured in the newspaper from Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve.

Every cent donated to the drive benefits the children because all overhead costs are borne by the Caller-Times, United Way of the Coastal Bend and participating agencies. Nearly $3 million has been raised since the program began.

The families are selected by the participating United Way agencies because the agencies are best equipped to decide on the assistance needed by each family.

Participating agencies include the Duval County Attorney's Christmas Program, the Kleberg County Welfare Department, Nueces County Department of Human Services, the Odyssey After-School Enrichment Program in Rockport, the Women's Shelter of South Texas and Sinton for Youth.
