An information security veteran with more than 20 years' experience, Mandia was singled out for his company's landmark February 2013 report, "APT1: Exposing One of China's Cyber Espionage Units", that traced individual hacks of U.S. companies to Unit 61398 of the People's Liberation Army, supporting allegations of China's involvement in state-sponsored espionage. In its recognition of Mandia, FP editors wrote "Mandiant's report has made it much more difficult for China to pretend it isn't launching attacks."

In addition to being named a global thinker, in 2011 Mandia was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the Greater Washington area. He has provided expert testimony in hearings before the House Intelligence Committee along with regular commentary and analysis on cybersecurity issues for national print and broadcast media including NBC News, CBS, NPR (News - Alert), Fox News, CNN the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He founded Mandiant in 2004, and the company was named 'Best Security Company' by SC Magazine in both 2012 and 2013. In November, Mandiant was recognized as one of Washingtonian Magazine's 2013 '50 Great Places to Work.'
