DUBLIN --(Business Wire)--
Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/sdp556/medipoint_total)
has announced the addition of the "MediPoint:
Total Shoulder Replacement - Global Analysis and Market Forecasts"
report to their offering.
Total Shoulder Replacement Market to Almost Double by 2019
The global Total Shoulder Replacement (TSR (News - Alert)) market will reach a value of
US$959m by 2019, due primarily to a climbing number of shoulder
arthritis and fracture sufferers, according to a new report from
research and consulting firm The authors.
The new report* states that in 2012, the market for TSR across 10 key
countries (US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Brazil, China,
India and the UK) was estimated at US$526m, but increasing demand will
see this total climb significantly in the foreseeable future.
As of 2013, the US is estimated to comprise a majority of the market
share, with 69.6%, and will continue to contribute a substantial amount
to the global TSR market. Meanwhile, Germany is expected to remain the
dominant figure in the European market in the near future, followed by
France and Italy.
The author reports that the growth is being driven by increasing
numbers of symptomatic shoulder arthritis and proximal humerus fracture
cases among aging populations. The rise of reverse TSR devices in the US
and EU markets is cited as an important contributing factor, along with
expanded medical education and the adoption of TSR among surgeons in
Linda Tian, orthopedic devices analyst with The authors, states: Thanks
to manufacturers' commitment to medical education, the shoulder
community has witnessed an increased surgeon uptake of reverse shoulder
With a robust pipeline and increasing patient awareness of the latest
shoulder replacement techniques, the market should see solid growth in
the number of TSR procedures in the coming years.
However, despite the clinical success of reverse shoulder systems so far
in alleviating pain and restoring function, their widespread use remains
limited by a number of significant complications. Although some of these
have already been resolved with improvements in design and surgical
technique, issues such as dislocation, infection, acromial fractures and
scapular notching are yet to be addressed.
In addition to the wave of enthusiasm towards reverse shoulder
replacement, Tian also believes there to be market potential for
stemless shoulder prostheses:
So far only a few manufacturers have launched stemless shoulder implants
into the European market. Therefore, ample opportunities exist for those
who hope to capitalize on this growing market, explains Tian.
