OFT opens the door for cheap rooms at the inn

(Observer (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) December always seems a good time to take a look at shortcomings within the hotel booking market, since the sector's failings in this area represent one of the few corporate glitches to warrant a mention in the Christmas story.

So it appears neat that last week the Office of Fair Trading opened a consultation on revised commitments proposed by booking.com, expedia and InterContinental Hotels Group, after criticisms that clauses in their agreements restricted the ability of each online travel agent to offer discounts. The OFT says it is "minded to accept" the operators' solution as it should inject "meaningful competition".

Cheaper rooms at the inns, then.
