2.8-fold increase in new viruses targeting mobile gadgets in 2013: Kaspersky [Asian News International]

(Asian News International Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tokyo, Dec 22 (ANI): A survey conducted by information security firm Kaspersky Lab has reportedly revealed that there has been a 2.8-fold increase in new viruses targeting smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices this year.

The survey found 113,315 new viruses in the first 11 months of the year and the total surged by about 20,000 in October and 25,000 the following month.

According to the Japan Times, a Kaspersky analyst said that viruses targeting mobile devices began to rapidly rise in 2011, adding that the company discovered 6,293 such viruses from August to December that year, and a total of 40,107 in 2012.

The analyst mentioned that the number would multiply next year and they are likely to grow more sophisticated as the mobile communications industry is increasingly being targeted by cyber-criminals, adding that the viruses are embedded in applications and they infect mobile devices once the applications has been downloaded.

The firm categorized the viruses into four groups: to access personal information, to steal money, to remotely control mobile devices, and to carry out other illegal acts, the report added. (ANI) (c) 2013 aninews.in All rights reserved. Provided by Syndigate.info, an Albawaba.com company
