VEOLIA FOCUSES ON LOCAL COMMUNITY IN ITS CSR INITIATIVE [Week, The (Oman)]

(Week, The (Oman) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Our Correspondent Veolia Environnement introduced its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for Oman this week in an effort to enhance employee performance by benefit ing both the workplace and the local community. The French com pany is over 160 years old and services large cities and local com munities globally. It has operations in 48 countries and specialises in water and waste management and energy services. Veolia Water has been operating in Oman for more than eight years and comanages the water services for around 70 per cent of the population.

The programme aims to involve the community with the workforce and vice versa through a number of initiatives. According to Xavier Joseph, CEO of Veolia Environnement Gulf Countries, the initiative will include development programmes with school and uni versities in addition to voluntary charity work for its employees. As part of the CSR programme, Veolia will complete a Utilities Centre for Competency Development (UCCD) by the beginning of next year in collaboration with Oman Electrical Holding Company. The centre aims at providing training programmes to talented individuals in the elec tricity and water sectors in Oman.

Additionally, a new project, the Veolia Environnement Foundation will also be introduced as part of the CSR programme next year.

"Veolia continuously defines its corporate strategy by working with practices and attitudes that contribute to sustainable develop ment and drives for general improvements in the Omani com munity. There is no alternative but to be sustainable and responsible," Xavier said.

The CSR programme aims to raise awareness on the environ ment and protection of biodivers ity. Patrice Fonlladosa, president and CEO of Veolia Environnement, Africa and Middle East, explained that being environmentally con scious and working with the com munity is part of committing to the duties and responsibilities in the workplace. "We seek the opportu nity to reduce consumption of resources by maximising efficiency while protecting and enhancing the environment, " he said.

Examples of the company's CSR work include its collaboration with Majis Industrial Services and Port of Sohar in holding an event on Omani Women's Day to raise awareness about cancer detection and treatment. Veolia has also worked with young Omani engi neering graduates in efforts to reduce water losses for the Public Authority of Electricity and Water.
