Woman Steals U.S. $25,000 From SA Couple

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A MASVINGO woman working as a maid in Cape Town, South Africa stole more than $25,000 in various currencies from her employers and fled to Zimbabwe, a local court heard recently.

Vonganai Ranganai, 25, was refused bail when she recently appeared before Masvingo magistrate Oliver Mudzongachiso charged with theft.

She was accused of robbing South African Ahmed Essop, 64, of £2,580, 5000 Euros, 80,000 Rand, 10,100 Russian Roubles, and US$ 2,300, a Sony Digital camera and jewellery belonging to his wife.

After stealing the money sometime in September this year, Ranganai and her husband, Tichakunda Mangure, 25, fled to Zimbabwe to escape arrest.

Essop made a report to South African police leading to the arrest of the couple in Zimbabwe on October 13.

Local cops only managed to recover 225 Euros, 800 Rand, 100 Russian Roubles and a golden necklace.

Prosecutor Tafirei Tandirai told the court that Ranganai was employed as a house-maid by Essop at his Crescent Sunset Beach property in Cape Town.

He said Ranganai and her husband came up with a plan to steal cash and property from Essop's safe while he was at work on September 20 .

Asked by the magistrate where she got the secret number for the safe, Ranganai said Essop also left his safe keys lying around the house.

The court heard that after collecting the cash, Ranganai went to his husband's residence in nearby Dunnon and the couple left for Zimbabwe on the same day.

The magistrate remanded them in custody saying they were a flight a flight risk since they had already fled from South Africa to escape arrest.
