NCCU Appoints Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye as Provost(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) DURHAM, N.C., Jan. 6 -- North Carolina Central University issued the following news release: North Carolina Central University Chancellor Debra Saunders-White has appointed Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye as provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, effective January 1, 2014. His selection comes following a national search with a strong pool of candidates. Prior to joining NCCU, Akinleye served in higher education for more than 25 years in various positions. Most recently, he served as associate vice chancellor for Academic Programs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, a position he held since 2007. During his tenure at UNCW, Akinleye was instrumental in leading the online and distance education programs, increasing academic offerings at UNCW and its extension site, as well as leading the development and formation of a new College of Allied Health. He also brings expertise in accreditation, specifically with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Akinleye previously served as vice president for administration and chief operating officer, as well as interim vice president for Academic Affairs, at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Fla. He also held numerous positions, including dean, department chair and associate provost/vice president for Academic Affairs, at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Akinleye began his academic career at Bowie State University in Bowie, Md., serving as an assistant professor. He is published in an array of scholarly journals and other publications and has led presentations at conferences across the country. He has been responsible for securing new funding for several academic programs. "I am confident that Dr. Akinleye will provide sound leadership that will allow him to serve our academic community immediately," Saunders-White said. "He is invested in Eagle Excellence and looks forward to building and supporting our academic enterprise, one that will continue to provide students a marketplace of ideas, a high quality education and increase innovative and collaborative teaching, learning and research opportunities. "Dr. Akinleye has a proven track record that will be beneficial in ensuring that NCCU's support programs are appropriately designed to attract, retain and graduate traditional, non-traditional and veteran students." Akinleye earned his bachelor's degree in Telecommunications and master's degree in Media Technology from Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University. He received his Ph.D. in Human Communications Studies from Howard University. "I am honored to join the administration, faculty, staff and students, and entire North Carolina Central University community," Akinleye said. "NCCU's rich history and legacy for educating alumni who carry out the university's century-old motto of 'Truth and Service' is one that I have long admired. Under the leadership of Chancellor Saunders-White, I look forward to a productive tenure as we collaborate, teach and prepare the next great generation of leaders who are produced at this great institution." As NCCU's chief academic officer, Akinleye will work closely with the chancellor's Executive Leadership Team and University Planning Council to promote exceptional multi-dimensional educational experiences. He will lead the university in the areas of faculty development and academic planning and assessment and oversee all academic units, including the university's seven schools and colleges, as well as the enrollment management division.
