Puncak Semangat wins digital television bid [Business Times (Malaysia)]

(Business Times (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KUALA LUMPUR: PUNCAK Semangat Sdn Bhd (PSSB) has won the coveted bid to build, operate and manage the infrastructure for digital terrestrial television broadcast (DTTB) service in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced this in a statement late yesterday.

Puncak Semangat, which is a unit within the powerful Albukhary group, had nudged Redtone Network Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary helped by public-listed Redtone Bhd and privately-held i-Media Broadcasting Solutions Sdn Bhd to secure the contract.

The victory comes on the heels of Puncak Semangat securing a sizeable block of the 2.6GHz spectrum for Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network rollout in the country.

As per requirement under the tender specifications, the project shall be fully funded by Puncak Semangat through its own investments.

Puncak Semangat is also obligated to develop the DTTB infrastructure which includes a digital multimedia hub and a network of high, medium and low powered digital TV transmitters, the industry regulator said.

The first rollout of DTTB services is expected to be in the third quarter of 2014, with analogue broadcasting, switched off once the full digital platform has been rolled out.

"This in turn will allow for the digital dividend to be reaped and thus pave the way for more high-speed mobile broadband services in the 700 MHz band," the statement said.

The initial migration to digital will be for TV1, TV2, TV3, ntv7, 8TV, TV9, TV Alhijrah and Bernama TV, it said.

"The current radio channels can also be carried on the DTTB platform," it added.
