That was the day in ... 1974 [Edition 3] [Gloucestershire Echo (England)]

(Gloucestershire Echo (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) AS freak storms swept across the whole country leaving a trail of damage behind, Gloucestershire escaped quite lightly. Heavy hail brought traffic between Cheltenham and Stroud to a standstill while the storm damaged Tewkesbury Abbey. Office equipment worth Pounds 200 was stolen from Kingsdale Morris in Westgate Street but the store's manager Roger Sutton was puzzled by the thieves' choice. They'd ignored expensive typewriters and top-of-the-range calculators to take a Dictaphone without the cassettes or cables and two small pocket calculators. The bad weather didn't dampen the excitement of the autograph hunters waiting outside The Ritz in Barton Street as Marji Wallace, recently voted Miss World, arrived in Gloucester. Bingo-players abandoned their game to listen to her stories of life in America before she presented the winner's cheque to Stella Newman.
