VRC Seeks Board Of Directors [Daily Review, The (PA)]

(Daily Review, The (PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A local organization established to assist with rebuilding the Valley after the Sept. 2011 flood has begun laying the foundation for a new direction.

The Valley Relief Council will hold an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 to begin the process of forming a board of directors. The meeting will be held at the VRC's offices at 110 N. Higgins Ave. in Sayre.

With the goal of repairing flood-damaged homes largely met, the VRC has turned its focus onto assisting Valley-area families with limited income and assets with small home repairs, said chairperson Lucinda Brown. The organization will continue to build upon its experience with arranging, facilitating and housing volunteer groups to work with homeowners, she said.

The new direction comes with changes, Brown said. Part of the process will be to form a board of directors to help facilitate the program, raise funds and move the VRC forward.

Officials from Sayre and Athens boroughs and Athens Township have expressed interest in serving on the board, Brown said, as have local businesspeople and homeowners who received assistance from the VRC following the flood.

The VRC seeks potential board members with expertise in several areas, including construction, fundraising and administrative work, Brown said. She hopes a board will rally the community to support the VRC's new efforts.

While working with flood survivors, repairs were made largely using monetary assistance homeowners received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Brown said, with supplemental assistance from grant funding. As the VRC's mission shifts to low- income families, finding sources of funding will become critical, she said.

"Fundraising is going to be a huge part of this project," Brown said.

The VRC also hopes to partner with other organizations including Futurescapes, Athens Borough's long-term community recovery organization, to pursue grant funding and other partnership opportunities for its projects.

The VRC will seek donations, volunteers and other forms of community support once the board forms, Brown said.

Those interested in serving on the board may contact Brown at (607) 731-9595 or email valleyreliefcouncil@hotmail.com.
