Alert entrepreneur helps police arrest Nigerian fraudster [DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India)]

(DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Pune: Alertness of an entrepreneur running a software company helped city police cyber cell arrest a Nigerian who allegedly sent fraud lottery mails to citizens to dupe them.


The arrested Nigerian has been identified as Adams Emma Zuma (24), a resident of Mumbai and hails from South Africa. He has been arrested under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code comprising cheating and an act done by him with common intention and also under the Information Technology Act.

Interrogations with Zuma has revealed the names of his accomplices Jeffery Harvey, Barry Brown and Lincon.

The alert citizen Devashis Ramchandra Padi (36) hails from Orissa and is currently residing in Koregoan Park.

A case has been registered with Koregoan Park police station. Asssistant police inspector S M Babar is investigating the case.

Padi, who runs a software developing company since 2007 in Koregoan Park, said, "Jeffery had approached me via a professional networking site and showed interest to invest in my company for which he had sent me a business proposal on my email address under the name of Jerry. Since the mail landed in my inbox and not spam, I trusted it. Later, I yet again received a mail from the company which showed interest in investing 1,350 dollars in my business project. Later, for further communication they had given me a number. I later found the number to be fraud and approached the police." PSI Babar said, "Padi approached us and we had planed to zero down on the person. For two months, Padi was in contact with Zuma and finally on Wednesday around 2 pm a meeting was fixed at a Camp-based hotel. Thus we arrested him." On Thursday, Zuma was produced before the court of judicial magistrate (first class) SR Nimase and has been remanded in police custody till January 22.

Assistant public prosecutor Suchitra Narote argued that the gang is operating in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Such persons procure information via advertisements in newspaper for job opportunities and collect the data of their targets.
