National School Choice Week Rally in Philadelphia CANCELED Due To Weather And Safety Concerns

PHILADELPHIA --(Business Wire)--

The National School Choice Week whistle-stop event previously scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia has been canceled due to severe weather and safety concerns, organizers announced this afternoon.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has declared a snow emergency, the city's schools will be closed, and conditions have been deemed too unsafe for attendees to travel to the event.

"Canceling this event is not a decision we make lightly - and not one that we want to make at all," said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week. "But the safety of everyone involved with our event is our first priority. We are extremely grateful to our partners who have worked so hard to organize this event and expand school choice across the state of Pennsylvania."

Senator Pat Toomey and Sate Senator Anthony H. Williams had been slated to speak. The event was being hosted by National School Choice Week in partnership with The Center for Education Reform, Faith First Educational Assistance Corporation, Faith in the Future, Foundation for Excellence in Education, GreatSchools.org, KIPP Philadelphia, PennCAN, Pennsylvania Families for Public Cyber Schools, PublicSchoolOptions.org, REACH Foundation and StudentsFirst PA.

"We may not be able to gather together in Philadelphia, but we will continue to share the message that every child deserves effective education options. That message is being celebrated at the 200 events taking place at schools and organizations throughout Pennsylvania, and at the 5,500 events taking place all across the country during National School Choice Week," Campanella said.

National School Choice Week (Jan. 26 - Feb. 1, 2014) is an independent public awareness campaign designed to shine a spotlight on effective education options for children.
