NCKU President Awarded Distinguished Diplomat by ACOPNE
TAINAN, Taiwan --(Business Wire)--
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, a
well-recognized hydraulic expert, was awarded the title of Distinguished
Diplomat of Coastal Engineering by the Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port
and Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE) under the American Society of Civil
Engineers (ASCE) to commemorate his outstanding achievements and
contributions in the field of hydraulic and ocean engineering.
Hwung is the first ever Taiwanese scholar to be awarded this prestigious
title and one of the two scholars to receive Distinguished Diplomat in
2013.
The title will be officially awarded to Hwung during the 34th
International Conference on Coastal Engineering in June in Seoul, South
Korea.
Hwung was recommended by Dr. Young C. Kim, professor emeritus of civil
engineering at the California State University, Ls Angeles, and
received unanimous approval from the ACOPNE committee.
Hwung has engaged in long-term research on ocean waves and has carried
out many international collaboration projects with scholars from the
United States of America, Russia, Japan, Australia, France and so on.
His journal articles have been published in international top tier
academic journals. The results of his research on ocean engineering are
also excellent, especially in non-linear wave dynamics which he
pioneered and enjoys the highest status in academia at an international
level.
Hwung has published more than 100 journal articles and 300 academic
papers in well-known international academic journals and academic
conferences respectively.
His pioneer study of non-linear wave dynamics phenomenon is a world
leading research which he has published in books as book chapters,
including one in the Handbook of Coastal and Ocean Engineering.
Apart from his outstanding academic achievements, Hwung has also made
huge contributions to economic development and environmental protection.
He has dedicated approximately 30 years on efforts to develop and
maintain Taiwanese coastal projects, especially research and testing on
water inflow and outflow of Taiwan Power Company's nuclear and
fossil-fuel power stations.
President Hwung modified the water pumping system at the Third Nuclear
Power Plant as the original design of the system has led to the
destruction of coral growth at South Bay. His modified design has
successfully protected the ecosystem of the corals at nearby oceans.
