CEA Agrees on Several Presidential Policies that Would Help the Innovation Economy

ARLINGTON, Va. --(Business Wire)--

The following statement is attributable to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (News - Alert) (CEA)®, regarding tonight's State of the Union address:

"We welcome the President's call for a stronger focus on policies such as immigration reform and patent litigation that will help grow our economy and create new jobs.

We agree that the epidemic of patent troll lawsuits and threats must end. The costs of settling these extortion threats and lawsuits hurt small businesses, jobs and investment in innovative products and innovation, hurting our economy. The Senate must take action to stop these legalized extortion rackets from sucking the lifeblood from our economy.

We must also fix America's broken immigration system. Our taxes and universities train the world's best scientists, and then we insist they leave our country. We need highly-skilled workers from other countries to fill our skills shortage in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Immigrants account for a quarter of technology startups in this country, and the full House needs to take action and reform our visa program to welcome the best and the brightest from across the globe.

Additionally, we support the call for trade policies that take into account the role of today's digital economy. As the President said, new international trade partnerships will open new markets to American innovation and create more jobs here a home.

We would have welcomed a focus on regulations that choke entrepreneurship, the unchecked growth in our debt and the positive aspects of technology, but we appreciate the powerful conclusion, recognizing that Americans stand up to difficult challenges.

We urge members of Congress to work together to find common ground on the important legislation in front of them, so the uncertainty around immigration and patent litigation reform can be lifted and businesses can work to grow our innovation economy."
