University of Phoenix Supports New Federal System for Veterans and Active Duty Servicemember Students

PHOENIX --(Business Wire)--

University of Phoenix today reiterated support of new online accountability systems that ensure transparency and protect critical higher education benefit programs used by veterans, active duty servicemembers, and their families. University of Phoenix has served tens of thousands of active-duty servicemembers, veterans and spouses who have served in the United States military; its eight colleges and schools all have dedicated advisors, advocates and counselors for military students. The University supports policymakers' efforts to improve educational opportunities and services for the military community.

"The federal government's release today of a new system to better serve student veterans, active-duty servicemembers and their families rightly honors our nation's long-standing commitment to military students," said Dr. Bill Pepicello, University of Phoenix president.

"We are eager to match our existing student protections, systems and procedures at University of Phoenix to the government's new GI Bill Complaint System to ensure transparency, and high-quality educational programs and service," said retired Col. Garland Williams, Ph.D., who leads military relations at University of Phoenix. "We believe our service and procedures will work well with the new system brought online today by the Department of Veterans Affairs and its partner agencies-and will result in rapidly escalated and resolved concerns, where they exist, for our military students."

University of Phoenix leaders have commended the many Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs), including Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Student Veterans of America, for their collaborative efforts to make sure implementation of new student protections promote transparency and accountability at postsecondary education institutions.

In July 2012, University of Phoenix President Dr. Bill Pepicello expressed support of the President's Executive Order 13607-Establishing Principles of Excellence for Educational Institutions Serving Service Members, Veterans, Spouses, and Other Family Members.

University of Phoenix also commended Congressional leaders' work to protect critical higher education benefit programs used by veterans, active duty servicemembers, and their families-and supported H.R. 4057 legislation, Improving Transparency of Education Opportunities for Veterans Act of 2012. The legislation, later signed by the President, included a number of requirements that have been implemented at University of Phoenix, designed to help servicemembers and veterans make informed decisions about their chosen college degree programs.
