Westwood's Chris Turen Selected as HCHG Chamber "Educator of the Year"

LOS ANGELES --(Business Wire)--

The Harbor City Harbor Gateway (News - Alert) Chamber of Commerce honored Westwood College - South Bay Campus Pres. Chris Turen as its "Educator of the Year" at the HCHG Chamber Awards and Installation luncheon on Thursday, Jan. 30 at the Palos Verde Golf Club. Originally formed in 1939, the HCHG Chamber of Commerce has been working to improve business and economics, and to represent businesses and local residents at every level of government for 75 years in southern Los Angeles.

"The Chamber regularly recognizes education because we all know how important it is to business," said Joeann Valle, executive director of the HCHG Chamber of Commerce. "Westwood has always done an incredible job of contributing to and supporting the business community here and Chris has done a great job of leading that charge. We are very proud to honor Chris and Westwood College this year."

Turen has worked with Westwood College since 2002. He started his Westwood tenure working as a regional associate executive director in the California region, helping schools with leadership transitions. His role then expanded to Texas and Illinois. After serving as campus president of Westwood affiliate Redstone College in Los Angeles, Turen took on his current position of campus president for the Westwood South Bay campus in 2008.

Turen credits much of his success at the Westwood South Bay campus to his exposure to so many different parts of the Westwood College system. Working with numerou other campuses and leaders gave him the chance to see what was most effective, which he applies daily.

"Everything we do here and the success we enjoy begins and ends with our people," said Turen. "My job is to communicate what roles each of our staff plays and and to provide them with the tools they need to succeed. Seeing our students and staff succeed, and success happens here every day, is very gratifying, and I share this honor from the Chamber with our entire campus."

Turen will be part of an elite group honored at the event on Jan. 30, joining HCHG Chamber "Man of the Year" Councilman Joe Buscaino, "Business of the Year" Kaiser Permanente, "Small Business of the Year" Camp Run-A-Mutt, "Volunteer of the Year" Rohan Sourjah of Trico Maritime International USA and several others, "President's Choice Award" Evelyn Salinas from Simplicity Bank, "Community Volunteer of the Year" Mike Herrera from Boys and Girls Club of South Bay, and others.
