Figures have shown Apple took 41.8 percent of smartphone sales in the final three months of 2013, up from 40.6 percent in the three months to September. The gains have been attributed to last year's release of the iPhone 5S and 5C models. New iPhones were released in September in the United States and other world markets. While the iPhone was popular among Americans, the Android platform still held a majority with 51.5 percent of smartphone subscribers.
