(Naples Daily News (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 10--NAPLES -- The Naples Children and Education Foundation has named Brig. Gen. James W. Swanson as chief executive officer of the organization that sponsors the annual Naples Winter Wine Festival to improve the lives of underprivileged children in Collier County.
Swanson spent 32 years of active duty with the U.S. Air Force, followed by high-level positions with the Department of Homeland Security, the Military Officers Association of America and the American Bar Association.
"We are delighted that Jim Swanson has joined our team," Bob Clifford, chairman of the NCEF board of directors, said in a statement.
Since its inception in 2001, the annual wine festival has raised more the $123 million for NCEF. The proceeds are used to provide grants to nonprofit groups in Collier County that serve children's health and well-being, and for undertaking long-term initiatives.
"I'm honored and humbled to be selected for this wonderful position," Swanson said in a press release. "The chance to join the enormously talented and dedicated philanthropists of the NCEF and contribute to their critically important work was irresistible."
He assumed his new position last month.
His career with the Air Force included serving as commander of the worldwide legal operations agency and chief counsel at all levels of command. He deployed to the Middle East on several occasions and served in Saudi Arabia as the chief counsel to the commander of all American air forces in the region.
His final military assignment was as chief counsel for the U.S. Transportation Command, serving as senior managing partner for America's global defense transportation organization of more than 200,000 personnel.
Since retiring from the military in 2003, he has served in the Senior Executive Service with the Department of Homeland Security.
