AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation Awards $175,200 Grant to North Georgia Healthcare Center

RINGGOLD, Ga. --(Business Wire)--

The AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation's Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM program today announced a grant of $175,200 to the North Georgia Healthcare Center to support its Patient Outreach With Education and Resources (POWER) program.

The POWER program aims to provide testing and education to prevent, diagnose and treat diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease among the most underserved residents of North Georgia Healthcare Center's five-county service area. The program works to break down transportation and economic barriers by bringing free services to communities through a mobile health unit.

"Thanks to this support from the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation, we now have the ability to more effectively meet the needs of our community and expand education and screenings beyond the Center," said DeLaine Hunter, practice director and CEO, North Georgia Healthcare Center. "This funding will allow us to focus more on preventive heart health as opposed to treatment."

Heart disease accounts for 22 percent of all deaths in Georgia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.1 The grant from the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation will help the North Georgia Healthcare Center's efforts to improve these health statistics.

"Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and organizations like the North Georgia Healthare Center are creating innovative programs to help prevent and decrease the associated risks with this devastating disease," said James W. Blasetto, M.D., MPH, FACC, chairman of the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation. "We are grateful to the North Georgia Healthcare Center for its commitment to improving heart health in their community."

The Connections for Cardiovascular HealthSM program annually awards grants of $150,000 or more to U.S.-based nonprofit organizations working to improve cardiovascular health in local communities. This year, the program awarded nearly $3.7 million in grants to 19 organizations. More than $14 million in grants have been awarded through the program since its inception in 2010.
