The Taos Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to increase the town's tourism marketing budget by $98,600, most of which will be used for media buys in Albuquerque, Denver, and in key Arizona, California and Texas markets, the town said in a news release. The total tourism marketing budget for the year will now be $536,600.

The increase was made possible after a double digit increase last year in the lodger's tax. The added revenue will promote Taos "as a top travel destination in print, online, and with additional television advertising," the release said.

"After years of investing in the marketing plan, even during the recession, the Town's efforts are paying off. Revenue from our lodgers' tax has exceeded projections, and our tourism marketing has become self-sufficient. It no longer requires support from the general fund," Taos Mayor Darren Cordova said in the release.
