City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley Names Three New Executives to Board of Directors

SAN JOSE, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley, a nonprofit organization that mobilizes diverse young adults to serve as full-time tutors, mentors and role models to keep students in school and on track to succeed, welcomes three new members to the Advisory Board: Ed Eger, President and CEO of OANDA Corporation, Ragu Bhargava, Co-Founder and CEO of Global Upside, and Dr. Karie Willyerd, Senior Vice President of Learning and Social Adoption at SuccessFactors, an SAP (News - Alert) Company.

"It is inspiring to find incredibly successful executives who are committed to solving the education crisis in our country," said Toni S. Burke, City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley's Executive Director and Vice President. "With the addition of three new board members, the Advisory Board is better prepared than ever to help at risk students in Silicon Valley receive that support they need to realize their potential and succeed in school."

Mr. Eger has more than 20 years of experience growing businesses through innovative customer-focused technologies. As the father of a former City Year AmeriCorps member, Mr. Eger has seen the organization's impact. "My family has been committed to City Year since our son served in Boston in 2006, prior to attending college. The experience of a year of service developed him as a leader in ways we never could hve foreseen. I am excited to join the board and make an impact with City Year here in Silicon Valley," said Mr. Eger.

Mr. Bhargava is a strong believer in the importance of education. "Our company provides services to clients in 50 countries worldwide so we see global competition every day of the week. Nothing could be more important for the success of the U.S. economy than improving the quality of the education of our youth, and City Year is doing an outstanding job supporting the efforts of teachers and staff in the schools of San Jose and nationwide. It is an honor to serve with an organization that is wholly committed to making a difference in our schools," said Mr. Bhargava.

Dr. Willyerd, champion of innovation and talent development, said, "Similar to my work at SAP's SuccessFactors, I see City Year as a driver of innovation in the education space. Their work is changing the DNA of public schools and I am excited to help advance their efforts."

"We are thrilled to have the leadership of Ed, Ragu and Karie added to an already fabulous Board," said Sharon Matthews, board chair of City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley and eLynx President and CEO. "The level of strategy and commitment they bring will help scale our work and increase the visibility of City Year so we can serve more students and schools in Silicon Valley."

Last year, City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley added 90 days of school to the calendar year for students through extended learning time, and already 77 percent of students who City Year works with are on track to improve their ABC's: attendance, behavior and course performance in reading and math. City Year corps members are the first faces students see in the morning, and are there until the last student leaves at night. They work side-by-side with teachers throughout the day, and nearly 700 students attend City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley afterschool programs each day.
