Smartphone App Lets Users Join Fight Against Hate Crimes [Legal Monitor Worldwide]

(Legal Monitor Worldwide Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Law enforcement officials and community leaders introduced a smartphone app Friday that allows users to capture and report hate incidents.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Wesley and Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Michael Downing were on hand at the Museum of Tolerance to announce the release of the new CombatHate app available for Android and iPhone users.

Designed by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, CombatHate provides users with the capability to instantly— and confidentially — report a hate crime, hate incident or online hate to the human rights organization.

KNX 1070's Margaret Carrero reports Rabbi Abraham Cooper with the Simon Wiesenthal Center wants to make it easier to rally young people against all types of incidents of hate, be it graffiti, speech or bullying.

"We need you now on the front lines," Cooper said. "You're the main target of the hate and the bullying." 16-year-old Keileene Kasahara said just last month she was bullied about being the only Asian in her class – a reality that she hopes will provide a sense of what teens face everyday.

"More apps like this should be out there so we all have a perspective on what's going on and no one's ever alone," Kasahara said.

Wesley has previously collaborated with the Museum of Tolerance to extend the Los Angeles Superior Court's decades-old Teen Court through the Stopping Hate And Delinquency by Empowering Students (SHADES) program, which helps combat hate incidents and hate crimes on Los Angeles County's middle-, junior-, and high-school campuses, according to Weisenthal officials.  (c) 2014 Legal Monitor Worldwide.
