BRIEF: Officials could close popular reservoir this summer [The Record, Stockton, Calif. :: ]

(Record (Stockton, CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 24--MANTECA -- Officials may close a popular reservoir east of Manteca this summer, hoping to save water in case the drought persists.

The plan, which could be approved Tuesday by the South San Joaquin Irrigation District Board of Directors, calls for holding Woodward Reservoir about 18 feet below normal levels this year.

That would reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation and seepage. But it also would preclude any human contact with the water, for fear of contamination. Water from the reservoir is sent to Manteca, Lathrop and Tracy, in addition to being used by farmers.

"Our core business is irrigating crops and we need to deploy every possible step to conserve water for 2015," district General Manager Jeff Shields said in a staff report.
