Planning to buy a Galaxy S5? Better Buy Extra Storage [T-break Tech (Middle East)]

(T-break Tech (Middle East) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The release of the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been met with praise and some criticism, as with every smartphone release. But users planning to buy the smartphone are forewarned: a 16 GB version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 only has about 7.85 GB of usable space – less than half of the original advertised content.

A report by Android Central claims that this is the case with Samsung’s latest flagship, much like last year’s Galaxy S4. Nexus devices, which run on a ‘pure’ Android operating system without all the ‘bloatware’, normally wouldn’t take more than a gigabyte of storage. With the Galaxy S5, with all its bells and whistles, it almost amounts to about 8 GB on the device, occupying more than half of the internal storage. This is most probably due to most of Samsung’s own customisations, including TouchWiz, S Memo and S Health apps.

Well good news and bad news. Good news is that Samsung still includes a microSD card slot that lets you add more storage to the smartphone. The bad news is that KitKat introduces a new feature that prevents 3rd party applications from modifying contents on the SD card – meaning you would need a computer to organise the content. Google hasn’t really keen about using external storage (probably as to not sacrifice Android’s performance) as evidenced by its Nexus devices. In the end, it’s really up to you as to how you use the device. But don’t say we didn’t warn you.
