Family Group launches its foundation [Nation (Kenya)]

(Nation (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Family Group has set in motion a philanthropic arm through which it will undertake corporate social responsibility.

Family Group Foundation in which Sh100 million has been invested, will support programmes in education, agribusiness, healthcare and entrepreneurship.

It will be funded by a fraction of earnings made by its units including Family Bank, Kenya Orient Insurance, real estate firm Daykio Plantations and well-wishers.

The foundation launched its initiatives by awarding scholarships to 160 needy, but bright pupils, to pursue secondary education. The learners will be mentored, provided with leadership and life skills to mould the next generation of leaders.

The charitable unit is the brainchild of Mr Titus Muya, founder of Family Bank, owner of Kenya Orient and Daykio.

"We seek to make targeted and effective interventions for the most vulnerable members of the family. We aim to address the critical needs of those in the bottom of the pyramid," said Mr Wilfred Kiboro, chairman of Family Bank, at the official launch yesterday.

He said the number of beneficiaries would be doubled to 300 annually over the next three years. The event was attended by the Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and his education counterpart Jacob Kaimenyi.

"This initiative is an example of public private partnership that the ministry is keen to nurture to ensure that we collectively address the limitations of access to education," said Mr Kaimenyi.
