AHF Opens First Maryland HIV Clinic in Temple Hills

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. --(Business Wire)--

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) opened its newest domestic Healthcare Center early this year in Temple Hills, marking AHF's first offering of client-centered, specialized HIV/AIDS treatment and care in the state of Maryland.

AHF Healthcare Centers aim to decrease the number of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses by providing free HIV testing so people can be aware of their status; immediate linkage into care - regardless of ability to pay - for those who test positive; and support through ongoing follow-ups to ensure adherence to a health regimen that will ultimately extend life expectancies and reduce the risk of transmission.

According to the Maryland Department of Health and Human Hygiene, there were approximately 27,710 adults and adolescents reported to be living with HIV as of December 31, 2011. That same year, Maryland ranked ninth in the nation for cumulative number of AIDS cases (38,418 as of December 31, 2011) and third among U.S. states and territories in estimated HIV diagnosis rate. Additionally, national estimates suggest that approximately 6,250 Marylanders are HIV-positive but are unaware of their status.

"We are so excited to be expanding our services to the state of Maryland," said Dr. Roxanne Cox (News - Alert)-Iyamu, the head provider for the Maryland clinic. "Though we've been offering care in Washington, DC for years, this will allow residents of Maryland, particularly Temple Hills, to have specialized treatment and care easily accessible from their homes without a long commute."

AHF operates more than 20 Healthcare Centers throughout the United States - in Florida, California, Georgia, Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, Nevada, and Washington, D.C. - and many more in the countries where AHF works throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. More information about Healthcare Center services and locations can be found at www.hivcare.org.
