BostonGlobe.com Launches Metered Subscription Model

BOSTON --(Business Wire)--

BostonGlobe.com, the website that provides complete access to The Boston Globe's award-winning journalism, today launches a metered subscription model that will allow occasional readers to sample some content for free.

The meter, which takes effect today, gives readers access to 10 free stories on BostonGlobe.com during a rolling 30-day period, which begins with the first story. Readers will continue to have access to Globe content when referred from social media and search.

"We're making this change so occasional readers can sample more of our news, features, opinions, and investigative journalism, free of charge. We hope these readers will find that the Globe is an essential part of their day, and become subscribers," said Pete Doucette, vice president of consumer sales and marketing. "Our hift to the metered model is part of our effort to continually experiment, test, and analyze how our readers engage with us digitally. We want to find the right balance between sharing on social media and paid subscription access to premium Globe content, and we believe that we can only arrive at that balance through experimentation."

BostonGlobe.com, which launched as a subscription website in fall 2011, is the official website for the full spectrum of content created by The Boston Globe newsroom, which is continually exploring new ways to tell stories interactively. Subscribers have access to the Globe's award-winning news, opinion, commentary, video, and investigative journalism - and will be able to comment freely on articles, contributing to the debates and discussions that shape our city and our region.

BostonGlobe.com includes a continually updated stream of breaking news, as well as comprehensive sections like SundayArts, SundayTravel, and Ideas. The site also provides access to ground-breaking exclusives from our Pulitzer Prize-winning Spotlight and metro investigative teams, must-read arts, film, and music criticism, and the expertise of specialists like All Things Catholic columnist John Allen.

Subscriber benefits also include an optimal reading experience via responsive design across all devices, Today's Headlines Newsletter and Breaking News Alerts, and access to exclusive talks with newsmakers and celebrities through The Boston Globe Insiders program. Subscribers can freely access the ePaper replica edition and the Globe iPhone (News - Alert) app.

The metered model is expected to bring more traffic to Globe advertising, providing a strong return on investment for advertisers.
