Portland attorney John Dunbar leaves DOJ to join Markowitz firm [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. :: ]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 04--Veteran Portland trial lawyer John Dunbar has left the Oregon Department of Justice to join Portland commercial litigation firm Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf.

For the last five years, Dunbar had worked as the Attorney in Charge of the DOJ's special litigation unit. Prior to that, he worked for the Ball Janik firm for 18 years.

Dunbar, 56, represented the State in negotiations with the U.S. Department of Justice over improvements to Oregon's mental health system, and helped defeat a challenge by tobacco companies to restrictions on tobacco marketing.

"I was recruited to the DOJ five years ago by (former Attorney General) John Kroger," Dunbar said. "I was lucky enough to work for Attorney General Kroger and for the current AG, Ellen Rosenblum. But I began my career in private practice and I wanted to get back to my roots." Markowitz is one of the higher profile litigation firms in Portland. It has developed a tight working relationship with the state. It is representing Oregon in the ongoing dispute with software giant Oracle Corp. and the work it performed on the state's health care exchange.

Dunbar said he will focus his practice on complex commercial litigation, healthcare, public entities and environmental disputes.
